Antique 19th Century Chinese two piece basket, painted in matt black laquer/paint.

This stunning rare handwoven basket is made from very thin strips of wicker and then painted both inside and out with black paint or lacquer. It is a two piece basket and designed so that one half of the basket fits over the other half. There are thin strips of wood bent around the top and the bottom part of the basket which have pretty handpainted designs around them.  I imagine it would have been used to store some food, possibly rice.

There are obvious signs of age and wear around this beautiful basket. Some of the wicker is missing on the edges of the basket, with one or two minor splits and there is some wood missing at the very bottom rim/edging of the basket. However, all these flaws reflect its age and use and I personally love them. I have highlighted these perfectly imperfect features in the photos, so please do take a good look as they form part of its description.
