Antique 19th Century French Rat de cave candleholders

Used throughout France in the 18th and 19th centuries for lighting in wine cellars. The distinctive "rat's tail" at the top, was traditionally used for holding the candlelight, whilst going down into the cellar and also for hanging up on the wine cages. 

Lovely wrought iron spiralled sticks with working height adjusters, on beautiful hand turned wooden bases. Plenty of aged patina and wear on both candleholders. Taller one stands at 22cm high and the shorter one 17cm high.
