Antique French Marriage Dome (without glass)/Globe de Mariee
A magnificent Antique French Globe de Mariee dating to the 19th Century. It is very ornate and a fine example of the French tradition of wedding keepsakes. The brides' wedding tiara would have been displayed on the cushion, along with any other small keepsakes. The red velvet cushion is in worn, vintage condition and the brass gilt decorations all have a lovely aged patina to them. The glass mirrors are all intact though with no chips or breakages.
Globes de Mariée or Marriage Globes were displayed in homes to commemorate the couple's union and aspirations for their married life together. They would be proudly displayed and would hold symbolic keepsakes including the bride's wedding crown which would rest on the throne's velvet cushion. Originally, there would have have been a glass globe to protect these important souvenirs.
The piece has been decorated with bevel cut mirrors and gilt metal ornamentation all of which have symbolic meanings. For example, the diamond shaped mirrors would indicate how many children the couple hoped to have and the dove symbolises peace in the home.
Unfortunately, this piece has lost its original glass cloche but still makes a very impressive decorative display piece.
