Huge Antique 19th Century Swedish Marriage Trunk
Huge Antique 19th Century Swedish Marriage Trunk with domed lid
This is a very heavy and beautiful marriage trunk with original Swedish blue paint. The layers of painting and initials on the chest are a palimpsest of its family history. You can see in feint white paint, the initials KJD and the date 1833 which would have symbolised the bride's initials and the date it was given (The D at the end stands for daughter) It has then been later refreshed when passed down and new initials added EPS and the date 1870. (The S at the end stands for son) There are some very feint original designs on the lid too if you look carefully.
All original hardware is present, apart from the lock but the lid opens and closes beautifully and the heart shaped escutcheon is a particularly attractive feature. There are two small pieces of wood missing from the front corner of the left hand side, as shown in the photos but these are rather superficial and they don't affect the trunk in any way. The smaller internal candle compartment with lid is also present.
Measurements: height 74cm, width 135cm, depth 61cm
